Space Video of the Day - 070817

The mention of Bugs Bunny yesterday inspired me to search for today's space video, the classic (1953) Merrie Melodies cartoon Duck Dodgers in the 24-1/2th century. More of these classic Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes cartoons - as well as some brand new ones - are available here.

Space Video of the Day - 070816

Today's video shows the first man in space. No, not Yuri Gagarin; 47 years ago today, on August 16, 1960, USAF Captain Joe Kittinger rode a balloon up to 102800 feet, and then took a flying leap from the edge of space. As Bugs Bunny would say, "watch that first step - it's a lulu!"

Kittinger reached a speed of 714 mph (1149 km/h) during his 4 minute 36 second freefall, thus becoming the only man to break the speed of sound (the speed of sound is lower at the edge of space due to the much lower pressure) without being inside a vehicle, before activating his parachute at 18 thousand feet. This jump is still the world record skydive today.

Space Video of the Day - 070810

Today's space video of the day is two videos because i missed yesterday. First up is the launch of the space shuttle Endeavour on mission STS-118.

Next is a NASA press conference regarding tile damage on Endeavour (STS-118).

This looks like a fairly serious hit, and I'm sure that there will be some heavy scrutiny by Damaris B. Sarria's team.

This is the Space Video of the Week. Be sure to check out the Space Video of the Day Archive.

Space Video of the Day - 070802

Today's video has appeared on this blog before, just not as a part of the Space Video of the Day series. This is a 3-D video, so grab your red/blue glasses if you have them. The video was produced by JAXA, the Japanese space agency, from data acquired by the Hayabusa probe as it orbited the asteroid Itokawa.

Space Video of the Day - 070801

Today's Space Video of the Day is a complete shuttle mission to the international space station, as simulated using the fantastic freeware program Orbiter. The special thing about Orbiter is the collection of add-ons that have been developed by enthusiasts all over the world, allowing simulated launch, space operations, and landing of a multitude of spacecraft, both manned and unmanned, on the Earth, Moon, Mars, and destinations beyond.
